There is an interesting read over on Slashdot today, linking to an article at ITWorld which talks about the different rituals programmers use when they are “getting in the zone.”  Some things mentioned by the programmers include listening to certain types of music or going to movies the night before a rough day of work.

These superstitions are common throughout life, as they all give the mind a routine to go through when it needs to focus.

Personally, when I’m coding or writing, there are several things I tend to do to try to help my productivity:

  • If it is time critical, I get a large Dr. Pepper and start drinking it (caffine intake always seems to help me)
  • Music changes depending on my mood and the nature of the work  I am doing.   Routine work usually has me listening to a wide variety of genres.  Time-critical work ususally has rap music or other fast-paced, loud music playing.   When I am struggling with a problem, it is typically classical music or John Williams’ soundtracks
  • I sometimes play a few games of Halo before having to concentrate for long periods of time

So, WebHostingBuzz readers, what do you tend to do when you are working on web development, design, or troubleshooting problems?
