E-mail is critical for many people. When they can’t get access, they can get upset. In on-line forums of web hosts I’ve used, we frequently saw messages from frustrated users asking for help. However, in my experience users themselves are often responsible for their own lack of access.

One of the most common user mistakes is that of incorrectly entering login details.

WebHostingBuzz uses cPanel web hosting, one of the most popular web hosting systems. On cPanel, mail account names are case sensitive. This means that rover@dog.com is seen as a different login than ROVER@dog.com.

If you enter the wrong account name, which includes getting the case wrong, then you will not be able to login. The same case sensitivity applies whether entering details in your desktop mail software or logging in through a web-based mail client such as SquirrelMail. It is the login that is case sensitive, not the particular software or access tool.

Passwords also are case-sensitive, although this seems not to be as frequent an issue as most people expect passwords to be case-sensitive.

Before contacting your web host’s support about a mail access issue, double-check that you’re correctly entering account name and password with correct case.
